Never been so relieved to sprain an ankle

May 4, 2011

The good news I just recieved is that there is no tearing in my ankle, just a very bad sprain. Yay me! I’ve never been so happy to hear that I’m damaged in some way.

Over the past few days, people have told me horror stories of recovering from a torn ligament. Six months, I was told, from more than a few folks. Six months recovery time. Wow, hearing that was really making me worry. I kept getting the feeling that I’d done some real damage this time. It’s a very bad sprain, no doubt – but it’s only stretched, not torn or pulled away from the bone, and that makes me happy.

I got a big fucking Darth Vader boot today and I’m walking, which is more good news as I hate crutches. Try walking down the hall on crutches and coming back with a cup of coffee. It’s a pain in the ass. You can’t do it. It’s like a rejected obstacle from Mt. Midoriyama.

The bad part of this good news is that they say it could take up to six weeks for my ankle to come back. Eventually, stretched soft tissue does return to normal, if not fully, they say. I’ve got PT exercises to do, and I’m all for that. The quicker I’m able to come back, the better. I’m not going to force myself onto the matt if I’m not ready.

I spoke with Sifu about coming to Tai Chi, not this week, maybe not next week, but maybe sooner than coming back to Kaj. He said to take it easy. Tai chi is about filling your cup and emptying your cup, balance and shifting of weight. Not good for a damaged ankle. Take it easy, heal, and come back.
