Sock it to me.

Hrm, inauspicious first post …

… so I experienced first hand some of what the man was talking about when he warned against sparring with your wife. Well, not your wife…

The ‘punch line’ is that you end up having just punched each other in the face, but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that we each thought the other punched us in the face wrong. We were doing KM basic inside defenses, just parrying a jab and a cross. She doesn’t like the way I square up to punch her so she takes these giant steps backwards, so I would have to take a huge stride forward with the jab. We seemed like the only pair on the mat moving in an ever widening circle, she telling me to back up, I telling her to stop backing up. I step in with the jab and she parries and then drops her hands to try to tell me to back up, but by then it’s too late and I punch her in the eye.

Not our finest moment.

So now she’s throwing jab, cross and I’m parrying, and she’s getting in ridiculously close trying to convince me of how close she felt I was getting to her. Jab, cross, reset. Jab, cross reset. Jab, cross, resJAB.

So that was the end of the class for us. I called her on taking unfair advantage of the drill just to taste the sweet, sweet vengeance of a bare-knuckle punch to the face. She told me all of the things she believed I was doing wrong. By this time I’m convinced of the man’s words.

Don’t spar with your wife.
